James Love started practicing art in elementary school after losing his Nintendo Gameboy. He made and sold handmade comic books to buy a new Gameboy after his mother challenged him to figure out a way to buy one himself. Today, Love creates artwork using an intuitive and improvisational process. This style of working is inspired by his experience growing up in New Covenant Holiness Church in Burlington, NC where programs for the service are printed, but once the Spirit of God moves in the place, the programs are an afterthought. Love focuses on the mediums of drawing, painting, collage, and assemblage.
Artist Statement
My artwork is a reminder of the free flowing worship style of the church I attended in my youth. I create work that is inspired by that free flowing style. I do this by using any materials and surfaces that I’m inspired to use to create work that unfolds as I experiment and play with materials. I don’t want the free flowing worship of God and Jesus to die out with the generations who introduced me to it, so I preserve it through my artwork.
